Late Pramod Mahajan (1949-2006), former Union Minister, parliamentarian and senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had played a key role in developing Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini (RMP) to its present status and glory. From humble beginnings in a small office at Wadala in South Mumbai to the sprawling 15 acre, international standard training facility (Knowledge-Excellence Centre) in Bhayander, Mahajan truly brought in a lion's share for the growth and development of RMP.
A master of public relations, Mahajan's efforts helped RMP reach across various sections of society including elected representatives, civil society, business houses, bureaucrats and media. Pramod Mahajan sincerely believed in the concept behind RMP and on several occasions he stressed the need for building the capacities of politicians, especially those elected to public positions. He was a continuous source of encouragement for all the functionaries of RMP. In the true sense of the term, Pramod Mahajan remained an ideal mentor for RMP. His untimely demise in 2006 was like the loss of the head of their family for everyone at the Prabodhini.
Known for his professional approach, modern outlook and ability to think-big, Mahajan had made it a point to ensure that all facilities offered by the Knowledge-Excellence Centre at Uttan are of international standards: right from training sessions and research assistance to amenities and ambience.
He was at the helm of RMP for 16 long years as the Chairman and nurtured it like his own baby. Even while providing his visionary inputs for bringing perfection in the working of the organisation, he ensured that RMP office bearers enjoy ample functional autonomy. This encouraged active participation at every level and a healthy exchange of new ideas. It was due to his efforts that RMP could successfully seek UN recognition as an NGO in Special Consultative status.
That Pramod Mahajan made his mark on politics in India is beyond any doubt. However, his contribution in the institutional development of Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini (RMP) is something singularly unique.
